| A GIS system was used to calculate and report the locations and sizes of Internet
coverage areas, as well as the number of dwellings within each Internet coverage
type (serviced, under-serviced and un-serviced).
In order to produce estimates of the number of dwellings, businesses or institutions, within each Internet coverage type, the coverage areas were overlain on parcels that had valid civic addresses. Parcels that fell within each coverage type were counted. If quality of service factors existed for a particular area then counts were adjusted accordingly. |

Where parcel data was unavailable, DA’s from StatsCan were used instead. Each DA is associated with attributes indicating the number of dwellings within its extent. All DA’s contained within coverage areas were isolated and their dwelling counts were totaled. This estimate was then added to the dwelling count total for the coverage type in question. | ||||||||
